Abstract

In recent FSK coherent lightwave experiments at 2–4 Gbit/s,1,2 the modulation speed has been limited by the laser FM response which was flat to 1–2 GHz. For many lasers, a favorable AM response extends out to 10 GHz or more, and it is expected that the FM response should also extend to similarly high frequencies, since both the AM and FM responses are governed by carrier density changes.
