Abstract

Background: Traditionally colon lavage solutions are sipped at a rate of 30mL per minute while subjects rest on a couch. A successful colon cleanse before colonoscopy was achieved using an alternative method. It calls for bolus intake (8oz.-16 oz. per minute) of lukewarm normal saline combined with sequential posture changes (SPC), deep breathing and mindfulness meditation. This is now referred to more simply as Shudh™ colon cleanse (SCC). Aim: To measure a) net sodium and water absorption b) lavage time (LT) during SCC. Methods: Weight, vital signs and serum electrolytes were measured (N=9) before and after the SCC. The first bowel movement time (FBMT), transit time (TT) and LT were recorded. Total solution intake, stool volume and stool electrolytes were measured. Results: The net sodium absorption was 98.3mEq (range: 12 - 233mEq) and net water absorption was 831mL (range: 550 – 1425mL). The average LT was 75 minutes (range: 59 -114). On subgroup analysis, LT was significantly shorter for the 16oz. bolus intake group as compared to the 8oz. bolus intake group (p< 0.0159). The average volume of intake was 2L (range: 1500 - 2250mL). An analysis of pre and post serum electrolytes did not show any statistically significant differences. Conclusion: In this perfusion study, bolus intake of saline in conjunction with sequential posture changes results in no electrolyte imbalances and shorter lavage time.
