Abstract

For a rail vehicle with crashworthy performance, the end structure must have not only a strength performance for a statically endurable longitudinal design load without causing any permanent deformation, but also it must act as a crushable zone, for the non-crushable zone not to cause any visible collapse. That is to say, the end structure must collapse easily by a longitudinal load as low as possible, after exceeding the static design load. FEM crash analyses and static crush tests were done for two types of structure with different type of construction. The results showed that the ratios of the peak value of crush load to the static longitudinal design load of those two types were similar each other. This makes it easy for us to estimate a longitudinal design load for the non-crushable zone of new design vehicle, based on a specified statically endurable longitudinal design load for the end structure.
