Abstract
Marek’s disease is attributed to a renowned veterinarian Dr. Joseph Marek, who in 1907 described this disease as “Polyneuritis” during a research endeavor in four adult paralyzed cockerels (Gallus Domesticus) at Royal Hungarian Veterinary School Budapest. He observed that there was thickening of sacral plexus & spinal routes which were histopathologically infiltrated with mononuclear cells. After one year of that report in 1908, two scientists V. Ellerman & O. Bang from demark were successful in reproducing the disease by cell free filtrates. Peyton Rous in 1910 from New York, USA reported that avian sarcoma could be transmissible by inoculating the filterable agents. Marek’s Disease was 1st time reported in the UK during a gathering of Royal society of medicine by Galloway in 1929 (4). Although there were series of reports of significant losses due to morbidity and mortality in poultry but the disease remained unattended with respect to its etiology and control measure until 1970 when the effective vaccine was introduced.
