Abstract

Man-Nen Dokei was made by Hisashige Tanaka, who is a founder of Toshiba Corporation, at 1951. It has six multi-functional faces and is crowned with the celestial globe. A national project has been conducted to disassembled and restored in a national project. We have investigated on the mechanism of Man-Nen Dokei in cooperation with this project. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the mechanism and the design concept of the Wadokei, the Japanese traditional clock, which is the highlight of the Man-Nen Dokei. It has been clarified that the movement of "warigoma", square pieces indicating Japanese traditional time, is correspondent to the result from the real movement of the sun.
