Abstract
Limited English proficiency (LEP) is common in emergency department patients. Because many hospitals have no formal mechanism for written translations, many providers resort to the use of automated translation software, such as Google Translate. A recent study using professional translators to evaluate discharge instructions in Spanish and Chinese suggested that accuracy rates of Google Translate were high. The primary objective of this study is to perform a pragmatic assessment of the accuracy of Google Translate for the written translation of commonly used ED discharge instructions in seven of the most commonly spoken languages in our patient population using non-medical volunteers.
