Abstract

The scientific study of glass-forming substances has been important for well over half a century. The continuing interest in the behavior of these materials was confirmed by a simple computer search of the literature from 1968 to 1987 on ‘glasses’, which resulted in over 125000 citations, and ‘polymer glasses’, which resulted in over 10000 citations.1 A further glimpse of the importance of glasses as an area of scientific inquiry can be obtained by browsing through the books, special journal issues and symposium proceedings which have appeared over the past decade and half.2–10
