Abstract

Long distance (over 500 km) transmission of 10 Gbit/s based wavelength division multiplexed signals using semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) has been successfully demonstrated with a bit error rate (BER) better than 10/sup -14/ utilising the wavelength modulation technique. With the normal transmission scheme. There is an error floor near the BER of 10/sup -4/ regardless of the transmission distance. Which is due to the cross gain modulation effect in the SOA.
