Abstract

Due to the universal consumption and improper disposal, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been frequently detected in the aquatic environment worldwide. Conventional water/wastewater treatment processes are insufficient for PPCPs removal, which lead to the accumulation in receiving aquatic environment and potential adverse effect to the ecological system and human health. The determination of PPCPs in water/wastewater received more and more concern in recent years due to the potential adverse effect of PPCPs to the ecological environment and human. Accurate analytical techniques are challenging due to the low concentration level and complicated mixture of PPCPs in water. In this chapter, (1) the pretreatment techniques as well as quantitative equipment for PPCPs analysis are summarized and (2) the removal of PPCPs during water/wastewater treatment process and advanced control strategies, including membrane filtration, sorption, and advanced oxidation, are discussed.
