Abstract

In spite of the advantages and popularity of membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology in wastewater treatment, membrane-fouling control is still the major scientific and practical concern of this technology. This chapter reviews the fundamental membrane-fouling mechanisms and the factors affecting membrane fouling in aerobic MBRs. Various membrane-fouling control strategies in MBRs are classified into five groups, and each group is critically summarized. Based on these reviews, future research needs regarding fouling control strategy are proposed.
