Abstract

The classification of water-related conflicts, conflict assessment indices and the status of international agreements in the field of water were studied. It was established that along with positive properties, water has the potential for conflict. Conflicts are mainly related to the management and use of transboundary water resources, which in turn threaten regional security. Historical experience shows that conflict situations can be resolved peacefully by involving water diplomacy in negotiations. A typological classification of water conflicts has been developed. However, mechanisms for assessing the occurrence of water-related conflict situations need further improvement.
