Abstract

This study of ethnic identities is based on field research conducted among the Rastafari community of Shashemene, Ethiopia. The focus is on the changes in identity between the Rastafari settlers and their children, the young Ethiopianborn Rastafari, who are known by their community as the first free-born This paper attempts to show the identity change of Rastafari settlers since their arrival in Ethiopia, particularly among the free-born generation. It tries to identify the possible causes of this identity change, and cautiously indicates trends leading to further identity change in the future. This paper contributes to the ongoing study of social movements and their possible routinisation.
