Abstract

In Seto Inland Sea, there are many submerged projecting rocks which block the passage of ships. There are increasing demands for removal of these projecting rocks, this creates technical difficulties, however, as blasting is prohibited. To meet these demands, a special underwater jet piercing machine or thermodrill has been developed by authors and it could operate at depths of 10 to 30 meters. This paper reports the results of under water piercing tests on granite blocks at depths of 10 to 30 meters offshore Shodo Island in the Seto Inland Sea. The jet stream of the thermodrill has a total pressure of 20kg/cm2. The necessary equipments, …oxygen gas bombes, kerosene tanks, controller etc.…were installed on two 100 ton ships.A diver held the thermodrill and pierced the granite blocks. Very good results were obtained in these tests and the efficiency of the underwater thermodrill at depths of 10 to 30 meters was accertained.
