Abstract

A dog with severe pyoderma complicated with hypothyroidism had been treated with antibiotics and levothyroxine, but failed to respond. The pyoderma lesions gradually abated after Tamogitake extract administration for one week, and subsequently, pyoderma as well as alopecia that had afflicted the entire body completely disappeared 4 months after the treatment. In a healthy dog orally administered with Tamogitake extract, the value of serumβ-D glucan did not increase. However, the phagocytic ability of neutrophils slightly increased, and the amount of canine IL-8 mRNA in mononuclear cells increased. The results suggest that the effectiveness of the Tamogitake extract on pyoderma is produced through the mechanism that theβ-D glucan contained in the extact is ingested by macrophages in lymphoid apparatuses in the intestine and releases IL-8 from the macrophages. The IL-8 might increase the phagocytic ability of neutrophils.
