Abstract

A two-year-old castrated domestic shorthair cat positive for FeLV had attained a remission from mediastinal lymphoma diagnosed six months ago, and was referred for periodical examination. Nonregenerative anemia (PCV 20%) and thrombocytopenia (33×103/μl) were observed, and approximately 50% of the peripheral nucleated cells were erythroblasts (6, 188/μl). Further, a bone marrow examination revealed that 80% of all nucleated cells were erythroid cells with a blast cell count below 30% of all nucleated cells. According to FAB classification, the cat was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS-RAEB in T). Although intensive chemotherapy was performed, the anemia did not improved and the erythroblast count in peripheral blood did not decrease, and the cat died 1.5 months after treatment. At necropsy, erythroblastic invasion and proliferation were found in the bone marrow, liver, lung and spleen, and the cat was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
