Abstract
The Egyptians were gifted at creating striking visible symbols to illustrate complex ideas. An obelisk, such as Cleopatra's needle, is a sculptural representation of a mythological place and time. ‘The myth of Egypt: imagined Egypts’ looks at the history and meaning of obelisks in Ancient Egypt and the core myths of the period. Obelisks were often inscribed in hieroglyphs. The meaning of these hieroglyphs, from the 4th century onwards, was largely unknown and believed to be deeply significant. Decipherment came in the 19th century, and along with it disillusionment about the meaning of the symbols. During that time a lot was learnt about Egyptian myths.
