Abstract

Studies on autoimmune diseases were attempted using germ free animals. Firstly, amyloidosis spontaneously happened in germ free rats and mice as well as diffuse glomerulonephritis experimentally produced in them were discussed in connection with the spontaneous as well as experimental autoimmune disorders in conventional animals. Secondly, it was pointed out that germ free animals which are completely free from contamination of either microorganisms or their products can be utilized as ideal antigenic materials in the diagnosis of human autoimmune diseases.
