Abstract
Atong is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in the stream area of the Symsang river in the south Garo Hills District of Meghalaya in Northeast India. It is also spoken in the adjacent areas in the West Khasi Hills as well as in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. The first section is laced with maps to show the areas where this language is spoken. Names and allonyms of Atong are discussed in the next section. The people who speak this language are also known by the same name, Atong. There is a separate section discussing the Atong people, their ethnic affiliations, social organisations, living environment, ceremonies and festivals, their economy and their social interaction with others. Their linguistic environment, language status and language use are also discussed in detail besides the spelling system, dialectal variations and linguistic affiliations.
