Abstract

The assessment of significance is central to archaeological research and management planning. Perceived significance influences research decisions, such as which sites to investigate and what kinds of data to collect. Similarly, management decisions, that is, whether to preserve, alter, or destroy cultural resources, turn on the value of the resources vis-a-vis other planning considerations. At issue is the fact that the nation's archaeological remains are being methodically conserved or obliterated, depending on their adjudged significance. Yet, many of those who control the fate of cultural resources fail to appreciate the full complexity of the significance issue. This chapter focuses on a broadly based strategy for appraising significance that is needed to maximize the preservation and wise use of cultural resources. It explains the significance and the way to maximize the preservation and wise use of cultural resources. It illustrates the procedures for the optimal use of prehistoric cultural properties in light of emerging policies for the long-range management of the nation's resources.
