Abstract

This report summarizes developments under the CBD in 2011. It starts with an overview of inter-governmental meetings and other activities held under the regime, analyzes selected issues of relevance to international environmental lawyers, and concludes with an outlook for 2012 (for more information, see the report on Indigenous Peoples in this volume). In 2011, the CBD parties started tackling questions related to the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from Their Utilization (Nagoya Protocol) at the first meeting of the protocol’s Intergovernmental Committee, which was held on 5-10 June in Montreal, Canada. The committee was established by the tenth Conference of the Parties (COP-10) in October 2010 to undertake the preparations necessary for the first meeting of the governing body to the protocol.
