Abstract

The clause concerning increasing dependence is correct or incorrect depending upon how it is interpreted. It is correct as a necessary tendency of the capitalist system that must strive incessantly to subjugate the worker more and more. The concentration of units of production and the centralisation of ownership and, especially, of control over them in a few hands already work in this direction. The consciousness of the 'ultimate aim' has a big role to play in the socialist movement. Socialism as a doctrine certainly has its roots in modern economic relationships just like the class struggle of the proletariat, and just like the latter, it emerges out of the struggle against the poverty and misery of the masses that capitalism creates. Accordingly, the old Hainfield programme quite rightly stated that part of the responsibility of Social Democracy is to imbue the proletariat with the consciousness of its position and mission. Keywords: capitalism; consciousness; Hainfield programme; ownership; social democracy; socialist movement
