Abstract
The ‘Introduction’ provides an overview of the scope of the field of paleoanthropology and the time period over which human evolution has taken place. All organisms can be fitted onto a ’tree of life’. Life on earth began 3 billion years ago, and humans split from chimps only 5–8 million years ago. This VSI aims to explain how paleoanthropologists go about the task of improving our understanding of human evolutionary history, to convey a sense of what we think we know about human evolutionary history and show where the gaps in our knowledge are. The distinction between paleoanthropology and prehistoric archaeology is also explained.
