Abstract

Over the past two decades, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have received significant attention by the scientific community for potential electricity generation and wastewater treatment. In this chapter a brief introduction of MFCs and their components, performance, and various significant influential operational factors is presented. Moreover, various versions of MFC technologies such as microbial electrolysis cells, microbial desalination cells, microbial electrosynthesis cells, and other bioelectrochemical systems are briefly described. Various challenges of large-scale MFC applications for electricity generation and wastewater treatment are also described. In the current situation, reasons why MFCs are not ready for producing electricity to use in significant real-world applications are discussed. Water and wastewater treatment aspects in MFCs that are nearly ready for larger level implementations are discussed in detail in this chapter.
