Abstract

‘Introduction: China's unfinished revolution’ provides a general overview of the Cultural Revolution. Chinese revolutions had favoured modernism over Confucianism since the formation of the People's Republic in 1911 and the rise of the May 4th movement. The May 4th movement emphasised that culture was intended to serve politics, which influenced the Communist Party and Mao Zedong. Revolutionary China was initially successful despite criticism, but the Great Leap Forward caused a disastrous famine. Mao sought to overcome this catastrophe by rekindling the class struggle, mobilizing the masses into politics. The Cultural Revolution started with revolution, but descended into paranoia and repression. After Mao's death, the Cultural Revolution was disavowed.
