Abstract

Recently, various forms of electrical discharges for both polarities have been tested as a potential means for carbon structures synthesis: the glow discharge, pre-breakdown streamers, breakdown streamers, and low-current arc discharge. A novel method of carbon fibre synthesis by low-current electrical-discharge plasma in hydrocarbon vapours was proposed and presented in the paper. The discharge was generated between a stainless steel needle, and a plate made of a nickel-based alloy, for the voltage ranging from 2 kV up to 30 kV. The discharge was stabilized by a high series resistance (10 MΩ). The experiments were carried out in argon atmosphere, and normal temperature and pressure. The arc discharge of the current in the range of 1 ÷ 4 milliamps was found to be a potential effective route for carbon fibers production.
