Abstract

The artistic border is one of the most beautiful frames that appear in Hebrew books. This border was first employed in Rashi's Perush Rashi al ha-Torah and in the editio princeps of the Hebrew Bible, both printed by Joshua Solomon Soncino. This chapter describes the varied use of that attractive frame and other artistic borders used with Hebrew books in the incunabular period. It enumerates the Hebrew books with, and describes the frames employed on, the first fruits of the Hebrew presses of the fifteenth century. The chapter provides a limited number of examples of other decorative material used by the pioneer Hebrew printers. The primary source for the chapter is the Thesaurus Typographiae Hebrai-cae Saeculi XV compiled by Aron Freimann and Moses Marx. The final frame addressed here is an edition of the Arba'ah Turim Orah Hayyim (O. H.) printed by Samuel Dortas and his three sons in 1495.Keywords:artistic frame; fifteenth century; Hebrew Bible; Hebrew incunabula; Hebrew printers
