Abstract

The Eating Disorder Work Group for the 5th Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM 5) has proposed to re-articulate and expand an existing diagnostic category and retitle it Avoidant / Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). In those with this disorder, food or eating is avoided to the extent that nutritional requirements are not met, resulting in either considerable weight loss or lack of appropriate weight gain, but body image concerns are not the cause of the poor food intake.
