Abstract

This book covers the emerging research area of using alkali-activated materials (AAMs) in environmental technology applications, such as pollution control in water, gas, and solid waste streams. The state of the art related to using AAMs in adsorption and ion exchange, catalysis, membrane filtration, passive pH control, disinfection, and solidification/stabilization of hazardous wastes is presented in the book. In addition, relevant physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, preparation, modification and functionalization, life cycle assessment, and productization aspects of AAMs for environmental technology applications are discussed. This introduction chapter defines the scope of this book and key terminology and provides a brief overview of the trajectory of the research on AAMs.
