Abstract

Shaking of infants and young children by their caregivers can result in head trauma and death. Little, however, is known about this behavior outside of high-income countries. This study examined shaking as a punishment in young children in Chad, a country with an overall high prevalence of physical punishment of children. This study aimed to determine: 1) the prevalence of shaking; 2) whether hypothesized child, maternal, and household characteristics are related to shaking; and 3) whether shaking is associated with other caregiver behaviors directed toward the child.
