Abstract

The purpose of this research is to discuss the impact and influence of certain first-generation Korean fashion designers who were active in the Myeongdong districts during the 1950s. In order to reach a conclusion, various questions must first be answered. To begin, first generation Korean fashion designers that set foot in the Myeongdong district in the 1950s are discussed as well as the characteristics of their work. Secondly, the influence these designers have had on the Korean fashion trends of the mid-20th century and their status in the Myeongdong fashion community are explored. Thirdly, an analysis of Kyung-ja Choi and Nora Noh’s contrast to other designers from the time period and the historical impact their activities had on Korean modern fashion is conducted. Finally, the research deliberates on the ability of these designers, who were active during the beginning of the post-traditional era, to contribute to the modernization of Korean fashion. Dong-sik Han, Song-juk Oh, and Myeing-eon Shim were the first to enter the Myeongdong district, which eventually made it the center of modern Korean fashion alongside Kyung-ja Choi. Su-yeon Seo’s Arisa Yangjangjeom presented designs featuring simple cuts, and Dong-sik Han’s Han Yangjangjeom put an emphasis on high quality, classic styles. Song-juk Oh and Myeing-eon Shim’s Song-ok Yangjangjeom provided their employees with outstanding benefits. While Kyung-hee Kim’s Mademoiselle focused on designs which accentuated women’s beauty trends, Jong-cheon Lee’s Salon de Mode focused on making durable, personalized clothing. After a thorough discussion of research, the researcher concludes that the fashion designers that settled in the Myeongdong district transitioned Korean fashion, which was limited to copying western styles prior to the Korean war, into the designer fashion era. Referred to as the first generation of Korean fashion designers, they revolutionized Korean women’s fashion from the 1950s through the mid-1960s.
