Abstract

As the major cell surface receptors for the extracellular matrix, integrins regulate adhesion and migration, and have been shown to drive tumor growth and progression. Our earlier findings have identified integrin α3β1 as a key regulator of the keratinocyte secretome and of the skin tumor microenvironment, indicating its potential efficacy as a therapeutic target. Previous mass spectrometric analysis of conditioned medium from immortalized keratinocytes indicated that α3β1 positively regulates colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF-1), a secreted cytokine that is a primary regulator of macrophage differentiation, proliferation, and survival.
