Abstract

Scanning stereoscopic-PIV (particle image velocimetry) system was developed to measure the three-dimensional vortex structure of micro-synthetic jet in low Reynolds number cross flow for examining the effectiveness of the vortex generation for flow control. The jet orifice diameter was 0.5 mm, and Reynolds number of the cross flow based on channel height was 650. In stereoscopic-PIV measurement, misalignment between the position of the calibration and the laser light sheet illumination can introduce the uncertainty of velocity data, especially out-of-plane component. In this study, we have developed the correction procedure, in which misalignment of parallel and inclined planes of the light sheet can be detected and corrected. Consequently, 3D-3C velocity field can be measured more accurately. It was found that the micro-synthetic jet generated the hairpin vortex.
