Abstract

Formation process of PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon) from benzene, produced in a flow tube reactor at atmospheric pressure and temperature 850-1300K, has been investigated using GC-MS. In this study acetylene has also been added to benzene to examine the effect of HACA (H-Abstraction-C_2H_2-addition) mechanism on the products from benzene pyrolysis. PAH was detected approximately over 1050K and the main products were phenanthrene, biphenyl and naphthalene in benzene pyrolysis and benzene and acetylene pyrolysis. The amount of phenanthrene increased slightly by acetylene addition over the whole temperature range, at which PAH was formed; however acetylene addition had no effect on naphthalene formation.
