Abstract

Although most reviews on the subject of vulvovaginitis in adolescence mainly reiterate the knowledge of what is known from adults on vaginal candidosis, Trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis, the specific interpretation of findings in this age group requires much more nuance. First of all, Trichomonas is a strictly sexually transmitted pathogen, which is hence very infrequent in youngsters, especially when not yet sexually active. If present, however, sex could have taken place with elderly men or women, as the prevalence data in Western countries show highest prevalence between 40 and 46 years of age.
