Abstract

Introduction: The optimum timing for surgery for dense bilateral congenital cataracts remains uncertain. Birch et al showed recently that deprivation amblyopia can be minimized by surgery before 14 weeks of age and that their acuity outcome data best fit a bilinear model. A previous study from this unit suggested that the critical period for fixation stability in binocular deprivation may be as short as 3 weeks. We have attempted to build on this work by assessing a cohort of children who underwent bilateral lensectomies at our centre in order to further explore the optimal timing for cataract surgery.
