Abstract

Background: Adherence challenges are common among children over 12 years old with type 1 diabetes. Family functioning affects hemoglobin A1c (A1C) and has long been considered an important target of psychosocial interventions to address adherence. Behavioral Family Systems Therapy for Diabetes (BFST-D) is a well-established family-based intervention teaching families communication skills, cognitive restructuring, family therapy and problem solving and has positive effects on family adherence and metabolic control.
