Abstract

It has been well documented that obesity is now considered a global epidemic in both childhood and adult populations. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 16% of youth aged 6 to 19 years are overweight. Prevention of obesity has now become a public health priority. Childhood has been identified as an important period for prevention of obesity. Avoidance of accelerated weight gain in childhood has been identified as a way to prevent adult obesity. Overall, the evidence suggests that diet and exercise interventions alone that focus only on changing child behavior are not effective in preventing childhood weight gain.
