Abstract

Leadership development during the first year of employment is imperative because this is a period of rapid turnover and career transition among young nurses. Data have shown at our hospital that after 12 to 18 months of employment, young nurses are looking for a change. As a leadership team on a 15-bed General Pediatric Unit, we recognized the need to quickly assess and identify talents and strengths among new nurses. Our goal was to develop an atmosphere of support and professional development that would build leaders for our unit within the first year and decrease turnover.
