Abstract

Background/context Simulation is increasingly being used in medical education to supplement traditional teaching. With improving technology, virtual worlds (VWs) are increasingly playing a part in providing online simulation. Orthopaedics often receives little formal teaching. A novel VW training and assessment programme has been developed to cover the management of an open fracture of the lower limb according to the British Orthopaedic Association Standards for Trauma (BOAST) and Advanced Trauma Life support (ATLS). The primary outcome was to assess the face and content validity of this novel educational programme, as well as demonstrating general acceptability. Methodology 30 post-graduate (PG) doctors were recruited and divided into cohorts according to training level and years of post-graduate training; Foundation trainees (PG 1–2 years, n = 10), Core Surgical trainees (PG 3–4 years, n = 10) and Registrars (PG 5–10 years, n = 10). Each ran through the programme, and completed a subjective questionnaire, that used Likert scales (scores 1–7) and semi structured interviews, to provide information for face and content validity. The median scores and ranges were calculated. Results/outcomes The study demonstrated face and content validity with highest ratings by Foundation and Core Surgical trainees (PG 1–4 yrs). Semi-structured interviews demonstrated that the programme was enjoyable, interactive, and would be useful as a teaching tool to junior trainees. Conclusion This study demonstrated face and content validity of this novel interactive programme, as well as demonstrating a general acceptability of such technology in medical education.
