Abstract

Puberty encompasses a set of biological processes marking the transition from childhood to adulthood, such as growth spurt, the maturation of primary and secondary sexual characteristics, sex-specific redistribution of muscle and adipose tissue. Adolescence is often called the ‘psychosocial puberty’, consisting of essential steps in mental and social development that involve a number of important developmental tasks. Typically, adolescents seek diversion, new experiences, and strong emotions, sometimes putting their health at serious risk.
