Abstract
The timing of puberty varies widely in the population and is determined by a complex mix of inherited genetic variation and environmental influences – nature vs nurture. In this talk will describe how large-scale population studies (N > 600,000 research participants) have identified over 700 genetic determinants of pubertal timing, now explaining one third of the heritability of this trait. Some of the key findings are highlighted from these studies, including how genes which regulate puberty timing impact other aspects of reproductive health and behavior. The lecture will also describe how identifying genetic determinants of puberty timing can biological, epidemiological and clinical research questions.
