Abstract

A simple method to predict the split initiation near the notch tip in unidirectional composites is presented. The method makes use of the stress states near the notch tip and the Tsai-Hill failure criterion. The predicted stress intensity factor for split initiation agrees fairly well with the experimental results for T300/934 graphite epoxy laminates. Since the 0° split in ( 0 90 ) laminate also is seen to occur almost at the same value as in unidirectional laminate, the method is suitable to predict the 0° split initiation in cross ply laminates also.
