Abstract

We describe the observation and characterization of dislocations with (0 1 0) habit planes in the complex intermetallic alloy ξ ′-Al–Pd–Mn by means of transmission electron microscopy. Contrast-extinction experiments show that the Burgers vectors of the dislocations are parallel to the [0 1 0] direction, which reveals that they are prismatic edge dislocations. Their movement is shown to take place by pure climb. The [0 1 0] dislocations are split into two pairs of partials. We argue that the Burgers vector length of the full dislocations amounts to 16.56 Å and that of the individual partials to 4.14 Å.
