Abstract

The paper aims to reveal importance of the regional periodicals as a source to study the history of the South Ural railway intelligentsia in the second half of the XIX - at the beginning of the XX century. The article analyses the South Ural provincial periodicals of the second half of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century with a view to compare representation of this theme in the official and non-official periodicals. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the authors explore a previously unstudied problem, systematize and introduce relevant empirical material into scientific circulation, identify informative value of certain types of periodicals, taking into account representation of the railway intellectuals’ activity in the South Ural region in the second half of the XIX - at the beginning of the XX century. The research findings are as follows: the authors reveal the role of the provincial periodicals, which serve as highly informative sources in this field. It is shown that at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, the local periodicals vividly discussed different aspects of the railway transport development in the South Ural region thus provoking public interest for the problem.
