Abstract

The verb reduplication of “V了V” is a common expression in modern Chinese. However, there are not many studies on this structure in the field of grammar. This paper mainly analyzes the verb reduplication of “V了V” from the perspective of pragmatic function, and summarizes its pragmatic function: First, it can express a soothing and relaxed feeling; Second, it has the function of marking foreground events in sentences; Third, it is equivalent to the State Adjective to enhance the descriptive nature of discourse. In addition, this paper also discusses the pragmatic constraints of the verb reduplication of “V了V”: it can not appear in imperative sentence, negative sentence, sentence using Modal verb, question sentence, exclamatory sentence, but can only appear in affirmative statement sentence, but also be limited to some extent. This is also the difference between this structure and “VV” verb reduplication in terms of pragmatic function.
