Abstract

The article considers the problem of differentiating the key meta-terms of linguistic semantics - “meaning”, “idea”, “notion” and “concept”. The author presents a survey of the existing views on the linguistic sign. Linguistic phenomena of conceptualization are realized at the semantic level; consequently, description of the linguistic sign meaning allows identifying its conceptual content. Scientific originality of the research involves the comprehensive approach to studying one of the key concepts of classical semantics - the notion “meaning”. The findings indicate that “meaning” is determined by the linguistic sign semantics and does not correlate with the general meaning of a statement.
