Abstract
The aim of the study is to identify the value meanings contained in the semantics of people nominations formed from the lexeme province, and to identify the specifics of the province phenomenon manifestation in them. The article attempts to identify the differences in the semantic and pragmatic nature of the lexemes from the generic pair “provincial man - provincial woman” by analysing the dictionary definitions of nominations in lexicographic sources and language material from the national corpus of the Russian language and Internet sources, as well as analysing the adjective and predicative compatibility of nominations. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the comparative analysis of the nominations, which makes it possible to identify various kinds of differences in the components of the object of study. As a result, actual axiological characteristics of nominations with a positive and negative connotation were revealed.
