Abstract

In this paper, a lightweight single-sided LED Variable Message Signs(VMS) that can be attached to a street lighting pole and a double-sided LED VMS with a transparent display were manufactured and tested for daytime and nighttime legibility distances, which are most important for LED VMS. As a result of the subjects legibility distance measurement, the average legibility distance of the single-sided LED VMS was 201m during the daytime and 163m at nighttime, which was measured as more than 134m, which is the demand reading distance required on the road at 60㎞/h(4th quartile). In addition, according to the analysis results, there was no significant difference in daytime and nighttime legibility distance by gender within the error, but it was analyzed that the legibility distance increased by about 1.2times during the day than at night.
