Abstract
We have obtained a waxy and acidic substance with strong offensive odor which is characteristic to rain spoilt dried squid. When the waxy substance was heated at about 160°C, needle like crystalline (I) was formed by sublimation. We reported about (I) having an empirical formula of C2H4O. By this experiment, we were able to isolate the another acid as a flat leaf form crystalline by heating at 200° ?? 205°C the residue formed by the process of obtaining (I) from the waxy substance. We found it to be phenylacetic acid (II) by its infrared and ultraviolet spectrums, and by test of mixed melting point. The waxy substance consists of about 70% of (I) and 30% of (II).
