Abstract

The paper analyzes the main substitutions identified based on comparing the sermon manuscript «Vinets Khrystov» («The Wreath of Christ») by A. Radyvylovskyi, the editor’s corrections in this manuscript, and the old-printed «Vinets Khrystov» (Kyiv-Pechersk lavra printing house, 1688). The substitutions characterize the linguistic choice in the literary language of the end of 17th century, the specificity of working on the author’s manuscript while an unknown editor was preparing it for printing. On the data of manuscripts and books published during this period, the modus is defined as a discourse category reflecting the cognitive process of the speaker through his or her attitude towards the source of information and the way it is received (evidentiality), level of credibility of the speaker toward the information (persuasiveness). It is disclosed the narrowing of dialogism method, modifications of the mode, namely persuasion, direct and indirect evidentiality. Key words: modus, evidentiality, persuasiveness, discourse analysis, sermon.
